The Red House was occupied for a short period by Sir Henry Meysey Thompson when he contested the Handsworth Division in 1892. He was elected MP for Handsworth in 1892 and held that seat until he was ennobled on 26 December 1905 as Baron Knaresborough.
A caricature of him appeared in "Vanity Fair" in June 1887
